What is Cos & Effect?
Cos & Effect is an annual Costume, Cosplay, and Alternative Fashion convention that takes place in Vancouver BC Canada. It is owned and produced by IRL Events, and made possible with the support of the diverse geek and sub-culture communities of BC. Our convention’s content is targeted towards people 16-30 years old, although most of our content is appropriate for all ages. All 18+ ot 19+ content is clearly marked, and IDs will be checked before entry. Our goal is to provide a fun and creativity fueled convention, featuring tons of original panels and events not available anywhere else. Unleash your creativity!
Cos & Effect – The Beginning
- “Masks & Mirrors? Mode & Form?”
- “Persona? Chic Geek?”
- “Cos-Mode? Dork Side?”
- “How about Cos & Effect?”
- “No, that sounds dumb”
When we first decided to run the first ever Costume, Cosplay, and Alternative Fashion convention back in September 2010, we didn’t even have a name for it. All we knew is that we wanted to create an environment where people could explore different forms of fashion, dress-up, and acting in character. It wasn’t even until January 2011, when it became clear Anime Evolution (a local Anime convention that took place in August) was going on hiatus, that we chose to hold the event in August and began referring to it as ”the August event” often adding afterwards “that really needs a name”.
To-date, the naming of Cos & Effect remains the greatest difficulty we’ve faced while organizing it.
Cos & Effect – 2011
The first annual Cos & Effect took place on August 13th and 14th, in the Student Union Building at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver). The convention featured 2 main events rooms, 2 general panel/workshop rooms, and content located in the university’s pub (for 19+ audiences). The convention also featured an artist alley, and a dealer’s hall.
Cos & Effect – 2012
The second annual Cos & Effect took place on August 24th to 26th, once again at the Student Union Building, but also including the Student Recreation Centre, the War Memorial Gym, and one of the Gage Towers meeting rooms, all at the University of British Columbia. In addition to expanding the convention to a total of 4 different buildings, Cos & Effect has also moved from being a 2 day convention to a 3 day convention, and will now feature guest panelists. The convention will continue to host an artist alley, now organized by the local comic society: Cloudscape, and a dealer’s hall.
